Plan a Halloween Party they’ll never forget!

Have you noticed that Halloween isn’t just for kids anymore? It can be a great night for the whole family and particularly if you want an alternative to trick-or-treating. Throwing a Halloween Party is a sure fire way to get both adults and kids excited about Halloween.


Halloween party invitations are very important. They are the best way to get your guests excited about the party. Send out some great hand made Halloween party invitations, it will get the kids involved, and you can be sure your party will stick in people’s minds. Two weeks in advance is the best time to send them. Let them know there will be prizes for the best costume or scariest pumpkin (more about this later *)

- Create a cute ghost card using your kid’s footprint. Use some black construction paper and fold it in half. Have your child dip his/her foot into white paint and stamp the card with the footprint. Let your cards try. With a black marker draw a face to your ghost. Write a message with a gold pen inside your card.

- Use some of our printable Halloween invitations and write your message with a shaky hand, then wrap it in a little cob webbing and enclose little black plastic spiders for extra creepiness.

Create the spooky ambiance Halloween is famous for. Hairy spiders in webs in ceilings and corners is the classic but here are some other decorating tips:

- Cover tables with black table cloths and decorate with pumpkin cutouts and pumpkin garlands (you can get a pattern to make it yourself) Cover sofas and chairs with white sheets.
- Light essential passageways to the toilets or the bar with inexpensive rope lights but try to keep general lighting to a minimum, substituting black or red light bulbs.
- Have a pumpkin contest (announcing it in your invitation). * Ask your guests to bring their carved pumpkins to the party and you will have some of the best decorations delivered to your door.
- Make a pumpkin patch. Put some boxes on a table to get different heights for display, draping dark fabric over them. Add some real vines of leaves or green ribbons for contrast and of course use tea lights to illuminate. This could also be a good place for your snacks.
- Roll up orange napkins with black cutlery inside placing it inside a bat napkin holder.
- Place rows of tombstones with the names of your guests leading up to your door. Use decorated cardboard or cereal boxes.
- You can also hang Halloween lights around your front door and use a fog machine to welcome your guests (available at party rental stores)
Games and Activities can really make all the difference and they encourage people to mix. Don’t forget to have lots of prizes on hand.
- Create a Halloween photo backdrop for everyone to get a picture taken.
- Have an area where kids can create their own frame for their photo.
- Have a dance contest to the Monster Mash song.
- Have a Halloween Lotto giving out prizes of miniature candy bars or party favors.
- Rent Halloween videos for later in the evening.
When it comes to food and refreshments, it’s hard to know where to start. Serving chips and dips in black plastic cauldrons or floating a rubber hand in the punch bowl are just the beginning. There are many sites with great Halloween resources.

Halloween isn't just ghosts, witches and monsters or about candy or costumes. Halloween is a perfect time for spending time with family and friends. Having a Halloween party offers plenty of easy and interesting decorating projects and activities for kids as well as for adults.

Labor Day Menu

Kielbasa with onions&peppers (Polish Sausage)
Italian Sausage Rolls
Baked Beans
Broccoli and Cauli
Salad fixins
(red lettuce,tomatoes,green pepper,cukes
with favorite salad dressing)
Lemon Bars

3 pkg. of Hillshire Kielbassa
2 pkg. of Italian Rolls
3 onions (sliced)
3 green or red peppers (sliced into strips)
1 head of broccoli
1 head of cauli
red lettuce
tomatoes
green pepper
cucumbers
salad dressing (variety)

Lemon Bars
1 cup flour, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 cup margarine or butter, 2 eggs, 1 cup of sugar, 2 tbsp. of flour, 1 tbsp. grated lemon peel, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 2 tbsp. lemon juice

Heat oven to 350 degrees, In large bowl, combine flour and powdered sugar; cut in maargarine untile crumbly. Press flour mixture into ungreased 8 or 9 inch square pan. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. In small bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light colored; stir in rembaingin ingredients, Pour egg mixture over partially baked crust. Return to oven and bake 18 to 25 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely. If desired, sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into bars.

Cut kielbasa into serving size or buy sausages that are
already serving size.
cut in half....place on hot grill for 15 minutes on each side
or until nicely browned.
Slice onions and peppers into strips, place on tinfoil and then on grill
oil tinfoil first on surface where onions and peppers will sit! Let grill
for 30-45 minutes
(use to garnish sausage...you can also add mustard and sauerkraut)

Broccoli and Cauli
Cut up in dipping size pieces
Steam...
use butter with some rosemary crumbled to season.

Baked Beans

2 28oz. cans of Your favorite Baked Beans
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tbsp. mustard
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 clove garlic

Mix in a casserole and place in oven for about 45 minutes or less. You can add more brown sugar if you like them sweet. or place on grill in a bean pot for 45 minutes.

Spaghetti and Meatballs

Spaghetti before Labor Day

1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. (a few twists of the pepper mill)
of fresh ground pepper
1/2 cup bread crumbs
a few sprigs chopped of
parsley
rosemary
oregano
chives and basil

one onion chopped
(save some for sauce)
2 lbs. of ground round
mix with a little beer your husband
is drinking ..just a touch
(i am drinking some rum
and coke...see note*)
and add one egg.

Mix well with fingers or wooden spoon
make into little balls and drop into
hot oil, about a couple of tbsp.
and brown.



Drop into big pot you have browned a
red onion in. Add 1 28oz. can of puree
and 1 28oz. can of sauce, mix in one 6oz.
can of paste. Add chopped herbs. Mix all together.

Add a few cloves of garlic....mash with a wooden mallet
and remove outer covering, chop and add to sauce.

Add some liquid to frying pan...some soy sauce, some
rum and coke or beer .... very little liquid...just enough
to remove the browned beef bits and pour into sauce.
Let simmer for an hour stirring every 15 minutes or so.

Fill a large pot with water and add pasta of your choice.
Follow directions on box. Please use a metal pasta server
to separate pasta as it cooks, especially at first. Keep
stirring and separating...otherwise pasta will clump.

Strain, place in serving dish, add some sauce and meatballs,
sprinkle with parmesian cheese and serve with a nice salad and
some red wine.

If you have children, late July, August and early September represents more than summer ending, cooler weather and fall foliage. School begins once again for millions of kids across the country. Getting your child prepared, regardless of whether they are in Kindergarten or a senior in high school, is a must. Here are some tips to make the transition from several weeks of summer fun to school days and homework easier.

Children in Kindergarten – 5th grade

1. About a week before school starts, have your children go to bed at the time they will when school begins. Set their alarm or wake them up early. It’s difficult for some kids to adjust to going to bed and getting up earlier after having an entire summer of sleeping in or staying up late. Many young children need to be on a schedule and preparing a week or so earlier will pay off, especially if you have a night owl or late sleeper.

2. If you have a school supply list (many school districts post them on their website or hand them out the last day of school), buy the supplies early. For the child who is not organized, this is a good way to begin the school year off on the right foot. Label everything and get the backpacks ready the night before school starts. Buy some extra supplies to keep at home if your child is one to lose or forget their pencils or markers at school. They will probably need some basic supplies for homework time. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to do homework and discovering the basics are missing.

3. If you have a Kindergartener, walk to school two or three days before school begins (or drive if they take a bus or you will be driving them). This helps acquaint them with what they will actually be doing that first day and can work wonders for alleviating the first-day jitters. If your child is especially anxious, ask if you can let them visit their new classroom for five or ten minutes the day before school starts. Many principals will let the Kindergarteners come to the campus prior to school starting.

Middle School

1. Many sixth graders will be attending a new school for their middle school years. Oftentimes, the campus is much bigger and can be intimidating. Of course pre-teens may not admit they are nervous, but most parents are. Suggest a bike ride over to the school sometime during August just to look around. Many middle schools conduct orientation anyway a couple of days before school actually begins, but an extra trip without all of their peers might be worthwhile.

2. Just as in elementary school, it is important, if not more so in middle school, to have all the school supplies ready, especially an organizer. Some schools make it mandatory for the students to purchase an organizer directly from the school. Get in the habit from day one of checking it and being sure homework assignments are recorded. Visit the school website and see if homework and grades will be posted on the site. This is an excellent way to stay involved with your child’s progress throughout the year.

3. If your student struggles with the basics; math or language arts, consider hiring a tutor for some review sessions before and during the first semester. Also, it is quite common in middle school for students who are excelling to be moved to Honors classes sometime during the year. Being in an accelerated class is a good way to prepare a student for Advanced Placement (AP) classes in high school, which count as college credit.

HIGH SCHOOL

1. Find out when the PSAT and SAT exams will take place. If your student is not a good test taker, consider enrolling them in a test prep class. As colleges become more and more competitive, test scores make a difference. One can take the exam more than once if they are not happy with the score, so plan ahead and register early.

2. Stay tuned in to your student’s school and social schedule. There is a tremendous amount of freedom in high school and even the most academically gifted students can be distracted by all of the things that are associated with the teenage years. Establish a curfew for school nights and limit the amount of time that is spent at a part-time job or involved in sports, especially if time management and study skills are not your child’s forte.

3. If your son or daughter is college-bound, start doing your research and be sure to attend the college nights that many high schools sponsor. Know what is expected on college applications. It is no longer a simple process like it was for the baby boomer generation. Test scores, a formal essay, volunteer hours, and class selection in high school are all important factors in getting into college. Take advantage of the many companies that exist today solely for the purpose of assisting you and your student select the right college for them.

Regardless of the age and grade of your children, stay involved. Volunteering on any level, whether it be reading stories to your elementary aged child’s second grade class, helping in the computer lab in middle school, or being on a committee for peer counseling in high school, it is important to know what is happening at the place your children spend a large part of their week. With so many parents working, many Parent Teacher Associations have their meetings in the evening, so more parents can attend. There are activities that need volunteers that do not involve daytime hours such as calling parents in the evening for a fundraiser or helping with a weekend car wash at high school.

Hello, my name is Caroline Shaw and I am the owner of this

St. Patrick's Day Recipes

Irish Dinner:
Top o' the mornin' to ya.
Mix cookies first..then start the rest.

Potato Soup

3 tbsp. butter or magarine
1 onion chopped
1 stalk celery chopped
3 cups water
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
3 cups of milk
Melt butter in a large pot and add onion and celery. Cook for 10 minutes over med. heat, stir. Stir in one cup of water, cover and simmer about 10 minutes more. Add potatoes and 2 more cups of water, cover and cook 10 minutes . Stir in milk, cover and cook until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper; sprinkle paprika on top...add a sprig of parsley.

Irish Stew

2 1/2 lb stew meat (round steak)
2tbsp. oil/butter
4 large potatoes
1 large onion
3 or 4 medium carrots
sprig of parsley
2 cups water
salt and pepper


Brown onion in oil or butter, add diced meat, then diced potatoes, sliced carrots. Brown for about 15 minutes. Add water, parsley, salt and pepper. Cover a simmer for about an hour or until meat is tender.

Green Salad

Mix any sort of salad greens you prefer...but add some parsley.

1 green pepper chopped
1 cucumber sliced

Dressing:

1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup sugar or honey
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. paprika
1 mashed garlic clove
Mix well and pour over salad


Irish Soda Bread

4 cups of flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. of raisins
1 1/2 to 2 cups of buttermilk


Mix flour, baking soda, sugar, salt together, add milk and raisins. On floured surface pat into a round disk. Grease cookie sheet, place soda bread on sheet and cut an "x" into center of surface. Brush with buttermilk and Bake in a preheated oven at 425 degrees until brown... apporx. 30 minutes. ...just make dough soft ball

Shamrock Cookies

2 1/2 sticks Unsalted Butter
1 Cup Sugar
1 Egg
1 Tbsp. Milk
1 tsp Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp. Vanilla
1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt
3 1/4 C Flour
Green sugar

Soften butter, cream sugar into butter once it is soft. Add egg, milk, juice, vannilla. Mix flour, salt, baking powder. Add to wet ingredients. Place in fridge for an hour. Take dough out and roll...cut out shamrock shapes Bake in 375 degree oven. Bake 8-10 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar.

A Moms Love Pittsburgh Steak Sandwich

Chuck's Pittsburgh Steak Sandwich

I took Chuck to Primante's last week for a steak sandwich, so
he said mom, let's make one at home and we went to the grocery store
and this is what Chuck put together:

1 box of Sandwich steaks (Giant Eagle Brand)

1 Loaf of Italian Bread (sliced thick)

1 red onion (sliced thin)

1 Bag Ore-Ida Extra Krispy Golden Krinkles

1 bag of pre-made cole slaw

Marzetti's Cole Slaw dressing

Frank's Red hot Sauce

Fry french fries then fry steak (45 seconds one side, 15 the other side)
Place steak on one slice of Italian bread, pile some french fries on steak,
layer with onions, layer on cole slaw you have mixed with cole slaw dressing
and sprinkle with some hot sauce, place other slice of bread and take a bite.
hmmm, sooo good.

This week, Charlie's girlfriend came over and we watched The Day After Tomorrow.
(good movie) She said let's have a chicken wrap sandwich, so we went to
the grocers and bought:

Shauna's Chicken Wraps

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

Big Flour Tortillas

1 green pepper

1 tomato

1/4 red onion sliced thin

1 can of black olives sliced

Red lettuce

1 bottle of ranch dressing

Cut up chicken into bite size pieces and saute'
in olvie oil, dice pepper into small pieces, dice
tomato. Warm tortillas in oven or microwave.
To assemble open tortilla and put chicken then
green pepper, tomato, onion, olives and ranch dressing.
You can sprinkle some Frank's Hot sauce on it too.

Now that's good eating!
